Chelsea Wolfe Interview: Witchcraft // Metal Hammer

Full feature by Natasha Scharf (Metal Hammer)

Chelsea Wolfe has understood the power of words since she was young. Troubled by insomnia and sleep paralysis, she’s found refuge among books and uses witchcraft and the tarot to guide her on the road. In recent years, she’s swapped LA’s bright lights for a more peaceful life in the Californian countryside, harnessing that serenity in the stripped-down acoustic sounds of her 2019 album Birth Of Violence. Although a very private person, she shares some of her philosophies on life.

Chelsea Wolfe Isolate/Create Project // Reverb

“Erde” is the root word for Earth, meaning “all-dirt.”

In this song I’m singing lines to Mother Earth about all the strange & painful dances we perform on her soil: a parent with a child on death row, corporate pollution that leads to disease in humans & rivers catching fire, & so much time spent staring at screens.. In the background I’m listing off poisonous & medicinal plants – summoning them. Musically, it’s meant to feel ritualistic & primal, very connected to the rhythms of the earth.

Here are the stems – remix it if you’d like. We are all forced to step back right now & see all these things with the perspective of finally slowing down. The world is always pushing us to move so fast – & it’s exhausting.. on us & on Mother Earth. Song located HERE.

As musicians, engineers, and producers are staying in, a slew of great artists have come together to launch a remix project. The Armed, Chelsea Wolfe, Converge, Pelican, Slow Mass, and more have made recordings available for free—opening their tracks for anyone to download, remix, and turn into new creations.

Isolate/Create, as they’re dubbing the project, was launched by The Armed. In a statement, the group said, “Stay at home and make something cool. All for the greater good of stopping the literal apocalypse.”

Once you’ve made something new, they’re asking that you share the work online with the #isolatecreate hashtag—and that you support the contributing artists directly if you can.

“Right now, you can check out stems, full multitrack sessions and artwork files from Converge, Chelsea Wolfe, Deaf Club, La Dispute, Pelican, Slow Mass, yours truly and more,” The Armed said.

To help offset the Isolate/Create server costs, Reverb is hosting all of the project files for free. Find and download them all below. Then share what you come up with using #isolatecreate.

CANCELLED: CHELSEA WOLFE EU ACOUSTIC TOUR

Due to the COVID-19 situation, venues closing, and new travel bans, it’s with heavy hearts that we’re announcing the cancellation of Chelsea Wolfe’s European acoustic tour. Chelsea and the team are safe, they’re flying home today. All shows are cancelled. Please support our bands and artists in this difficult time.

This is a message from Chelsea to all of you:

“Quietly crying in the airport as I leave my crew, gear, merch, stage crafts, & bus behind in Berlin to fly home. sadly, I’ve had to cancel/postpone my tour due to increasingly strict gathering restrictions, & new travel restrictions/misinformation. we’ve been in Prague for a few days, rehearsing & getting the show together, & I had so looked forward to sharing it with you. of course I understand that it’s important at this time for everyone to just stay safe & healthy, & I hope you’ll be understanding of this decision as well.. we stuck it out until it became unviable to keep pushing the tour forward.”

CHELSEA WOLFE IN NEW “HIGHWAY” VIDEO // Revolver

SEE CHELSEA WOLFE GO “GRAVE-HUNTING” IN NEW “HIGHWAY” VIDEO.

Clip was filmed in “a hidden graveyard in a small mountain town”.

Later this month, Chelsea Wolfe will hit the road in Europe and the U.K. in support of her 2019 critically acclaimed mostly acoustic album, Birth of Violence, and head of those dates, she’s offered up the gorgeous music video for LP standout “Highway.”

“I’ve been blessed to work with both Ben Chisholm and Kristin Cofer for many years now as creative collaborators,” Wolfe commented. “Ben sometimes does something called ‘grave-hunting,’ searching for graves for people online who are looking for their relatives in faraway cemeteries. Kristin and I went along with him one day last spring to a hidden graveyard in a small mountain town and I brought my guitar along. We searched, and filmed, and played some music for those who’ve passed on. The feel of the video was inspired by some footage I stumbled upon of Joni Mitchell from a 1966 French-Canadian TV show, after I had already written ‘Highway,’ but the feel was just so sweet and natural and free, and I wanted to bring that to life for my own song as well, since Joni has been such a big inspiration for me since childhood.”

Wolfe’s imminent European and U.K. dates will see her joined by Tribulation guitarist and solo artist Jonathan HultĂ©n — see the full itinerary below.

“American Darkness” KXCI Session

Chelsea Wolfe has always been a conduit for a powerful energy, and while she has demonstrated a capacity to channel that somber beauty into a variety of forms, her gift as a songwriter is never more apparent than when she strips her songs down to a few key elements. Independent radio station KXCI captured this minimalist beauty on the stage of Tucson’s Hotel Congress prior to her sold-out performance in the historic venue that night.
